Westfest
August 14, 2010
Rifle, CO
Review by: CF

First of all, my mom drove up from New Mexico in the morning to meet up with me later that afternoon in Denver. It took us about 3 hours to get to Rifle driving through the mountains, and it was a pretty beautiful scene throughout and I haven't been up that way in years. I brought all my Patty CDs and we listened to parts of them on the way up, and after reading Cole's Henderson review, I had an idea what the set-list might be. I told my mom stories along the way about Patty and about the songs, so that in itself was really nice and relaxing.

We got there about 7pm and parking was pretty easy to find. Rifle is pretty much what you'd expect of an old mountain old west kinda town, so that was a sight to see. Patty's show would take place at the County Fairgrounds in the arena area where the rodeo stuff went on, and when we go there, one band had just stopped performing. We got food and then the man himself, the creator of Westfest, Michael Martin Murphey, came on and performed.

He did a good job, though I was worried since he came on about thirty minutes late that Patty wouldn't perform as long as she could. She was scheduled to come on at 9pm and started at about 9:35.

Here's the set-list:
01. The Night's Too Long
02. Nothing But the Wheel
03. On Down the Line
04. You Don't Seem to Miss Me
05. You Can Feel Bad
06. Lovin' All Night
07. Crazy Arms
08. Color of the Blues
09. Why Baby Why
10. Prisoner's Tears
11. Bramble and the Rose
12. Busted
13. The Boys Are Back in Town
14. Here I Am
15. Halfway Down
16. You Don't Even Know Who I Am
17. The Trouble with the Truth
18. Blame It On Your Heart
19. I'm That Kind of Girl

It was so amazing seeing Patty walk out. So unreal. She was wearing some cowgirl boots, a blouse, and a skirt and pants (I think those are the terms lol), and she looked great. She came out singing "The Nights Too Long", which I gotta admit, I don't knew too well. Definitely gonna download that tune when I can.

Every single song was pitch perfect and better than the record. Her vocals were spot on and nothing beats seeing her sing her songs live.

On "On Down the Line", I loved the extra steel guitar solos they added in. Really nice. After she performed this, she remarked how bright the lights were (the spotlights) and how she couldn't see anybody, and to "be careful what you do in the dark" haha. She then began talking about George Jones, and began singing "You Don't Seem to Miss Me".

The audience was overall pretty nice. There definitely was less people than before, but that made it better because our seats were in the middle and it just made things in a little easier. My mom was having a good time, but kept texting now and then, so I was a little annoyed with that lol, and these little girls sitting next to us kept talking kinda loud, so I wanted to tell them to shut up, but I didn't because they quieted down a little later.

I did notice during "Prisoner's Tears", no drums were used. I loved the Sleepless Nights and Mountain Soul stuff she did, though I was hoping for "...Harlan" at the end haha. It's fine.

After "You Don't Even Know Who I Am", Patty introduced her band again and wanted us all to know their names by the time we left.

Before "Blame..." came on, she got everyone to their feet and helped with the words to the song. Everyone stood up and began to dance a little. That was really nice.

I was so happy she sang "...Girl". My mom wanted to hear that one too. Definitely a great way to close out the show.

Overall, an amazing time and I had a lot of fun with my mom. I wish we were a lot closer to the stage but it was fine anyway. The show was about 1:35 mins. Ended at like 11pm. Took three to get back home, so I was pretty tired when I got home lol. It cost about $60 per person for tickets, and I'd say it was worth it for sure. I'd love to see her again if she every came back around here Smiley . Red Rocks would be INCREDIBLE to see Patty at someday.
